Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary

A Halo: Combat Evolved remaster is reportedly in early stages of development and is being considered for PlayStation 5.

That comes from Tom Warren, who shared the news via his Notepad newsletter at The Verge. “Microsoft is reportedly in early stages of working on a remaster of Halo: Combat Evolved and is considering launching it on PlayStation 5.” It’s very unlikely that the project will be announced at the Xbox Showcase on June 11.

This remaster is a part of Project Latitude, which is Microsoft’s initiative to bring games from its Xbox umbrella to competing platforms like PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Other games being considered according to Tom are Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, Age of Mythology: Retold, Starfield, DOOM: The Dark Ages and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II. “I’m not expecting to hear much about Project Latitude during Sunday’s Xbox showcase, as Microsoft will largely focus on games for Xbox instead. Microsoft isn’t planning to go fully multiplatform and not have Xbox exclusives.” Microsoft has already ported Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, Sea of Thieves and Pentiment to competing platforms.

Tom previously reported that a new game Doom and Gears franchise will be revealed at the show, as well as some target dates including Starfield DLC (September), Avowed (November), Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 (November), Call of Duty 6: Black Ops (Late October) and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (December). “The second game will be a new installment of Gears of War, which hasn’t been earmarked as a Project Latitude game, so it should be exclusive to Xbox and PC. I’m also expecting we’ll see more of Fable and South of Midnight and even 2025 release windows for both of these titles. I understand both Fable and South of Midnight aren’t currently being considered for Project Latitude releases.”

Halo: Combat Evolved first launched in November 2001 for the original Xbox and two years later for PC. It has sold more than 6 million copies by November 2005, scored incredible 97 on MetaCritic and is seen as one of the best games ever made. A remaster titled Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary was released on Xbox 360 in 2011 for the 10th anniversary. The Anniversary edition was later re-released as part of The Master Chief Collection in 2014 for Xbox One together with original multiplayer and enabled switching between original and remastered graphics. The collection was ported to PC in 2019 and is available via Game Pass.
